For the VIP room of the Vienna store reopening in 2023, Hermès commissioned decorative artist Pierre Marie to create a decor composed of a stained glass bow window, an artist rug and custom interior fabrics.
A long-time collaborator of Hermès with a myriad of silk scarves designed over the years, Pierre Marie dives into the company’s historical archives and brings into the dialogue a 19th century play by Viennese Secession author Ferdinand Raimund. The fairy Lucinda gives Ewald, the protagonist, a magical torch that has the power to transfigure his perception of reality to only see its wonders and beauty. The decorative ensemble «À la Lueur du Flambeau» thus comes to life in this room overlooking the beautiful Graben. This narration deployed on various materials and surfaces constitutes an immersive and colorful artistic installation, composed of placed and repeated patterns.
For the execution of the artworks, Pierre Marie entrusted Ateliers Duchemin, masters in stained glass for six generations, to create the bow window, and the Manufacture Robert Four for the hand-tufted semi-worsted wool rug.
